Low Cost Internet FAQs

Wifi and internet are two different things. Wifi is an alternative to cables connecting devices. Wifi gives you wireless access to the internet from anywhere in your home via a modem, which translates the signal from Cox. The wifi router distributes your internet connection through your home so all your devices can communicate with each other and the internet.

As with most services you sign up for, you are making a commitment. This commitment is known as a term agreement, which is an agreement between us and you that provides you certain price savings for internet by sticking with us for a certain period of time. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied with your service within the first 30 days of your agreement, we offer a hassle-free 30-day money-back guarantee. This means, if you cancel within your first 30 days, there will be no early termination fee (ETF). To do this, please call our Cox Customer Care team at the number located on your bill. After your first 30 days have passed, you will be charged ETFs if you cancel your Internet service before the agreement is over. There are no ETFs for cancelling TV, Phone, or Homelife Automation. Homelife Security with Starter Equipment Kit requires a separate 2-year term agreement with ETFs. If you are not interested in a term agreement, we do offer month-to-month Internet plans for an additional small monthly fee. In the event you want to change services or equipment covered by a term agreement you can do so without incurring ETFs, but such changes will affect your rates and discounts. We want you to be completely satisfied with our services so please contact our Cox Customer Care team by chat or phone if you have any questions or want to make any changes to your account.

Two things matter as it relates to the speed of your internet connection: the download speed and the upload speed. Download is the speed at which your computer receives data from the internet. In general, when you browse a webpage, you pass a very small amount of data to the web called a request and the web page and all of the assets are downloaded to your computer. Upload is the speed at which your computer sends data to the internet (or cloud). This is mostly relevant when you are uploading pictures or videos from your computer to someplace on the internet. Generally, upload speeds are slower than download speeds as more customers have the need for downloading information from the internet, like loading web pages, streaming videos, etc. Download and upload speeds are both measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Check out our speed test for an accurate assessment of your current internet connection.

Pay for internet service before you use it with StraightUp Internet. Prepaid internet is similar to prepaid calling cards or cell phones. Pay in advance for 1 month at a time for a $50 flat fee, modem and taxes included, and get 1.25 TB of data each month. Visit our StraightUp Internet page for more information.

With Connect2Compete, ConnectAssist, or StraightUp Internet one wifi modem rental is included with the monthly package charge (may include refurbished wireless gateway). For Connect2Compete and ConnectAssist equipment must be returned on service cancellation. Additional equipment is extra, but if you would like to use your own device or upgrade to a Panoramic Wifi modem, you’ll need to place your order online, then Contact us.

To use your Cox Starter Internet package as wifi, you will need to add our Panoramic Wifi gateway or provide your own wifi router. Learn more about Panoramic Wifi and how it can help you get wall-to-wall, whole home wifi coverage. In certain cases, Panoramic Wifi Pods, sold separately, may be required for extended coverage.

Congress has not approved additional funding for the ACP. Beginning in June 2024, customers will no longer see the ACP subsidy on their bill.

May was the last month of the ACP subsidy, with a partial subsidy amount of $14 (instead of $30). Those on Tribal lands received $35 (instead of $75). Congress did not allocate additional funding for this program, which had over 23 million households participating. Cox was actively advocating to Congress for continued support.
